VLF Experiments


Description

I started 2008 with some VLF/LF experiments. The aim was to make experience with the peculiarity of this very low frequency. As antenna I used a symmetric shielded loop (#1.7m) with a preamplifier (INA163). The signal runs into a soundcard and the software is SPECTRAN and some other programs. As a test signal I used the russian "Alpha" signals (RSDN-20).

On Christmas Eve Sunday 24th December 2008, there was a transmission from the Grimeton Radio (SAQ, pdf, 21 kB) on VLF frequency 17.2kHz with the Alexanderson alternator and I received SAQ for the first time.

2009 I experimented with a homebrew VLF converter and I also received many VLF signals (SAQ too). But since the year 2010 the QRM increases annually. A VLF radio receiption is now unfortunately almost impossible...
